Investment approach benefits from extensive resources
Launched in 1989, Templeton Emerging Markets* is the largest Emerging Markets investment trust, with assets of £2.3bn. It has a strong long-term performance record reflecting its research-driven investment approach. Since February 2018, its lead manager has been Chetan Sehgal, who is based in Singapore and has been involved with the fund for a number of years having joined Franklin Templeton in 1995. Since September 2018 he has been supported by Andrew Ness, the fund’s co-manager, who is based in Edinburgh.
The portfolio comprises around 70 holdings across a spectrum of market caps and the managers are focused on a number of themes at present, including the rising importance of technology and companies that offer exposure to Emerging Markets’ longer-term consumption growth potential. The key overweight sector positions are to IT, through hardware, software and semi-conductors, Communication Services and Financials. In contrast, the portfolio is underweight Energy, Materials, Industrials and Utilities. In terms of country weightings, China is the largest exposure, albeit underweight against the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. Korea is the largest country overweight, while India is underweight.
